The metro station located in Guangzhou helps nearly 10 million passengers travel the city each day. For a location that is almost always crowded, security is paramount. Research has to translate into the real world, or else something would ever be found lacking. It was this reason that made Lee DerHorng, Fellow of Academy of Engineering Singapore, the Dean of PCITECH Global Intelligent Technology Academy & Traffic Brain Academy, as well as the Vice President of PCITECH & tenured professor of NSU, to want to step out of his ivory tower of academia at the NSU and into the real world, with PCITECH. Be it fate or coincidence, the company was also concurrently looking for someone to help them in overseeing their overall research.

China today is facing some very unique demands with MFA. In Guangzhou’s metro stations, when one gets into the train, you not only pay the fare but also need to go through a security check. This arrangement made it essential for officials to simplify the checking and the payment process, and combine the two into a very easy to use and efficient system for both the metro department and the end user. “At PCITECH, we have very successfully integrated different kinds of payment mechanisms into single methods, with its associated authentication techniques. We have been developing facial recognition solutions for seamlessly authentication and confirming security checks,” states Lee. However, in Guangzhou alone, the daily commute is about 10 million passenger trips, which is a considerable number. Within this space, even if facial recognition can achieve 99.9% accuracy, the error could be 100,000.

This is not acceptable, which is where the company sought to bring in the MFA, which would include vein recognition and other biometrics in combination with facial recognition to help eliminate the error resulting from the use of the latter alone. Such a technology, often only reserved for airports, was something the Chinese government wanted to implement in public transportation as well. However, it soon became apparent the difficulty associated in conducting a similar check at a train station, as it demands more resource, simply because of the difference in passenger volume. As a result, in the case of security checks, there was a need to ensure that both the checking and the payment were combined. At PCITECH they noticed this need and worked to provide a total solution, in one channel with their MFA, transportation security solution suite.

The company also specializes in public security, by studying parameters such as the posture and walking style/gait of a person, not just by face or identity. “When people rob banks in the movies, they change the clothes and get rid of the mask, but they never can change how they walk, this is something we hone in on as well,” remarks Lee. The precise application of their research is thus reflected in real life, beyond public transport, realizing Lee’s hypothesis.

PCITECH has since undertaken dozens of national and provincial major scientific research projects and has applied for over 500 national invention patents and software copyrights. The company has mastered core technologies in face recognition, structured video analysis, knowledge graph, and intelligent big data, mobile payment, and other fields.
