IoT Security Issues in Device Update Management
Insecure software or firmware is another source of IoT security threats. Even if a company sells a product with the most recent software update, new vulnerabilities will almost certainly emerge. Updates are necessary to keep IoT devices secure. When new vulnerabilities are discovered, they should be updated as soon as possible. Despite this, some IoT devices are still being used without the essential updates instead of smartphones or laptops that receive automated updates. Another concern is that a device will transmit its backup to the cloud during an update, causing a brief outage. A hacker could obtain important information if the connection is not encrypted and the update files are unprotected.

A lack of physical hardening can also cause IoT security vulnerabilities. Although specific IoT devices should be able to run without the need for human interaction, they must be protected from external dangers. These devices can be left in remote areas for lengthy periods, and they can be physically interfered with, such as with a malware-infected USB flash drive. The manufacturer is responsible for ensuring the physical security of an IoT device. However, manufacturers face a difficult problem in integrating secure sensors and transmitters into already low-cost products. Users are also responsible for physically securing IoT devices. If not adequately protected, a smart motion sensor or video camera installed outside a home could be tampered with.
Botnet Attacks
A single malware-infected IoT device does not constitute a serious threat; it is a group of them that can bring anything down. To carry out a botnet assault, a hacker infects bots with malware and instructs them to submit thousands of requests per second to bring the target down. The issue is that IoT devices are highly vulnerable to malware attacks. They lack the software security updates that a computer receives regularly. As a result, they are soon transformed into infected zombies and employed as weapons to transfer massive volumes of data.

A botnet can also pose a security threat to electricity grids, manufacturing plants, transportation networks, and water treatment facilities, putting large groups of people at risk. A hacker may, for example, trigger a cooling and heating system at the same time, causing power grid spikes; in the case of a large-scale attack, hackers could cause a nationwide power outage.
