A former Microsoft chairman and former CEO of Symantec expands his board role at Rubrik; the company's cybersecurity leadership is further strengthened.
FREMONT, CA: “We've built an elite leadership team of cybersecurity experts across public and private sectors to better equip our customers in the ongoing battle against data threats such as ransomware," says Bipul Sinha, CEO, and Co-Founder of Rubrik. Rubrik, the Zero Trust Data Security" Company, has hired John W. Thompson, former Microsoft Chairman and former Symantec CEO, as the company's lead independent director.
“John is a cybersecurity pioneer. His proven leadership and experience building iconic companies will help us continue to deliver data security innovations and define the future of cybersecurity,” adds Sinha.

Thompson has more than four decades of expertise as a leader in the technology business. He succeeded Bill Gates as Microsoft's board chairman and currently serves as the company's leading independent director. Thompson was previously the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Symantec, and he presently serves as the Chairman of Illumina's board. In 2018, he joined the Rubrik board of directors. He will continue to support Rubrik's aim to secure the world's data in his new capacity.
"While data is the most important asset of every organization, the traditional cybersecurity strategies have failed to protect data against modern cyberattacks such as ransomware,” says John W. Thompson. “In order to win this war on data, Rubrik is redefining the cybersecurity industry with data security that gives organizations business resilience. I’m honored to expand my role on Rubriks board and be a part of the company's hyper-growth trajectory.”
According to the most recent State of Data Security study from Rubrik Zero Labs, more than 98 percent of firms suffered a cyberattack in the past year, and more than half of those organizations were ransomware victims. As ransomware assaults continue to increase in frequency and sophistication, relying solely on infrastructure security is no longer sufficient. To effectively defend against cyberattacks, companies must prioritize data security as part of a comprehensive cybersecurity strategy to ensure the rapid recovery of mission-critical operations in the case of a cyberattack.
“No company, regardless of size or industry, should be without a data resilience plan. Cyber criminals continue to target our schools, our hospitals, our government, and other critical infrastructure. Rubrik helps organizations quickly get back up and running after an attack,” says Asheem Chandna, Partner, Greylock and a founding investor of Palo Alto Networks. “John is an industry legend and we are excited to welcome him to the lead independent director role on Rubrik's board of directors.”
“Cyberattacks are occurring at an alarming rate. To stay ahead of threats, the cybersecurity community must move fast to protect global organizations and the critical data we all rely on,” says Enrique Salem, Partner, Bain Capital and Netskope board member. “With John as the lead independent board director, Rubrik is in a strategic position to deliver on that promise.”
