Fire departments and smart cities are increasingly turning to the Internet of Things to help fight against fires and improve the safety of the building
FREMONT, CA: Several improvements in safety technology have benefited first responders in recent years, notably the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) public safety internet network.
The Internet of Things is another technological advancement that impacts one of the most critical aspects of public safety: firefighting. IoT solutions assist fire departments in various ways, and fire technology is advancing to accommodate them.

IoT sensors and devices can help intelligent cities closely assess buildings to identify fires more rapidly, offer more information to incident command centers, enhance computer-aided dispatch, improve situational awareness for firefighters once they arrive on the scene of a fire, and assist with fire suppression via smart sprinklers.
What Are Applications of IoT for Fire Departments?
In the context of fire safety, IoT has a wide range of applications. To help in fire prevention and response, low-power wide-area networks or wireless cellular networks can broadcast a large amount of data from IoT sensors.
IoT sensors can be integrated with items like alarms, personal safety gadgets, and fire suit technology. They can also monitor firefighters and provide incident commanders with a better understanding of the circumstances and visibility into where individual firefighters are during combat. Radio-frequency identification trackers, which can be integrated into firefighting gear, can show firefighters' locations at any time.
Wirelessly connected sensors can also send data to emergency command centers and incident commanders, subsequently passing it on to firefighting units.
The personal alert safety system gadget, which can detect firefighter mobility, is another IoT used for firefighting. When sensors identify the fireman has not moved for a predetermined amount of time, the device features an audio transmitter that works as a signal to locate the firefighter.
How IoT Supports Smart Building Fire Safety
IoT technologies can help make buildings more intelligent and safer and protect firefighters and give them additional information.
IoT sensors can monitor electrical systems in real-time and detect any active heat sources that aren't visible to the human eye. When a temperature increase is noticed, an alarm is issued to all relevant inspections to prevent potential disasters. Conventional smoke detectors are outperformed by IoT temperature sensors because they identify started fires significantly faster — even before they release smoke. In an emergency, where every second counts, the sooner an alert is activated, the more damage can be avoided.
IoT sensors can also identify smoke or carbon monoxide in a building, perhaps shutting down the ignition source. IoT allows for more precise firefighting, effectively putting out minor fires. A smart IoT-enabled fire system might be used to activate different measures for specific areas to limit the damage.
