FREMONT, CA: In this networked world, vehicles are always connected, which poses them to serious cybersecurity risks. This is because automotive manufacturers have become as much software as transportation companies, and they face all the challenges inherent to software security, which is far behind in keeping pace with technology in the automotive industry. One of the security challenges for the industry is the time taken between the conceptual beginning of a vehicle and its eventual launch. In the meantime, newer security challenges come into play so that the original equipment manufacturers (OEM) and other organizations in the supply chain are compelled to think about security as well.
When looking at designing a vehicle, security should be of significant consideration. This should start at the chip level. Even if there are weaknesses in the chip level, no matter how much security you put on top of it, there’s still a weakness. This has urged chip manufacturers to provide much more robust and secure solutions.
Because computers drive even the most basic recently launched vehicles, let that be the lane management, cruise control, lane metering, or infotainment system, it is driven by the computer. It is not just 5G connectivity, but the smart vehicles armed with Zigbee can connect with smart home systems. One example would be the house owners getting notified when their cars get closer to home about the state of the vehicle.
Starting with the fundamental activities in the vehicle design process, auto manufacturers should begin for general connected car security. Standard tools like fuzz testing and static code analysis are preferred. Auto manufacturers must manage the technical debt after the vehicle has left the production. More often, the only time when a car gets serviced is at the dealer, and it is when it will get a software update. Organizations have to look at ways to manage the software in those cars over the lifespan of the vehicle, where virtualization will play a key role.
Manufacturers cannot keep every version of the vehicle for testing, and thus, creating a virtualized environment and performing the level of testing required to manage security vulnerabilities can help a lot in the future years.
