Digitalization and new fire protection technologies can ensure that our fire safety systems are more effective, reliant, and sustainable.
FREMONT, CA: Water sprinklers are an important fire-fighting tool for both residential and commercial buildings. However, they do have some drawbacks, such as the fact that they use a lot of water, which makes them not a very sustainable solution. They can also be an issue in areas with delicate equipment or electronics. Here are some new and improved solutions that one may not have heard of before!
Suppression of Water Mist

Water mist systems produce much smaller droplets, reducing the amount of water used while increasing the area water is dispensed. In addition, they lower the overall temperature faster because what they make is essentially steam, which replaces oxygen, which is the primary fuel source for fire. It also forms a water barrier on surfaces, slowing the fire spread.
Video Smoke Detection and Video Flame Detection
Smoke and flame detectors play an important role in emergencies by providing an early warning, activating fire suppression systems, and allowing people to evacuate safely.
To detect fire, video image detection (VID) technologies rely on two components: cameras and computer algorithms. After scanning the area, cameras send the footage to a computer and then run an algorithm "trained" to identify groups of pixels that exhibit smoke and fire signature behaviors. If the computer detects it, it signals the alarm control system.
Internet of Things (IoT)
IoT creates a more secure and faster data connection between fire detection and life procedures. During an emergency, facility managers must access the entire fire safety system from a single room, device, or smartphone. Smart buildings with cutting-edge fire-detection systems use sensors to read the temperature of the building with such precision that they can detect a fire before traditional smoke alarms and immediately initiate a series of procedures to ensure safety and damage control.
Predictions for preventive fire protection would rely on data sources such as fire statistics, building data, geographic information systems, building sensors, weather, fire service deployment statistics, location analyses, and population statistics.
When fire breaks out, every second counts to minimize harm to people in the area, potential damage, and disruption to facility operations, the advancement of artificial intelligence, big data, and IoT will almost certainly lead to further improvements in the field, digitalization can make our lives easier and our work more efficient. Still, it can also help us save lives and navigate dangerous situations.
