Cybersecurity Measures for Guest Data Protection
In a recent interview with Enterprise Security Magazine, Sinto Neelankavil, FIVE's Group Director of Cyber Security, discussed the challenges of ensuring data privacy for guests and FIVE Tribe members. As a homegrown Dubai hospitality company with a global presence, FIVE recognises the critical importance of robust security measures to protect customer data in today's digital landscape.
Neelankavil emphasised that cyber security has become a top concern for hospitality groups such as FIVE, given the sensitive guest data at stake, including credit card information, health records, and personal details. To address these concerns, FIVE prioritises regular software updates, strong passwords, firewalls, and anti-virus softwares. Additionally, FIVE ensures that its FIVE Tribe is well-trained on cyber security, and the potential risks associated with breaches.
Comprehensive Security Practices
"At FIVE, the overall IT security stature is enhanced by the Vulnerability Management process, which identifies critical assets and establishes where efforts should be prioritised in order to minimise andy, and all, risks," explained Neelankavil. Implementing a Vulnerability Management Program has allowed FIVE to better protect customer data, comply with standards and regulations, safeguard the brand's reputation, and respond to incidents effectively.
The Vulnerability Management process at FIVE follows a strong 7-step approach. It begins with determining and organising the different types of assets within the company, including servers, end-user assets, databases, network devices, and other essential IT components. Vulnerability assessments are then performed using vulnerability scanners and penetration testing tools to identify weak spots that attackers might exploit. The severity of vulnerabilities is determined and prioritised based on their likelihood, and on their potential impact of exploitation.
Setting the Standard for Cybersecurity in Hospitality
Once vulnerabilities are identified and ranked, FIVE has an action plan in place to mitigate them. This includes applying patches and updates, modifying configuration settings, and implementing security controls to reduce risks. The company also continually monitors for new vulnerabilities and emphasises employee awareness through training programs.
FIVE understands that vulnerability management is just one aspect of a comprehensive security strategy. The company goes beyond it by implementing additional measures such as threat intelligence, incident response planning, identity and access management (IAM), data protection, and security monitoring and analytics. These measures ensure that FIVE remains proactive in addressing emerging cyber threats and maintaining the security of sensitive data and systems.
Neelankavil added: "Organisations must prioritise the implementation of a preemptive and comprehensive security approach encompassing threat intelligence, incident response, IAM, data protection, as well as robust security monitoring and analytics."
FIVE Hotels and Resorts' commitment to cybersecurity and comprehensive security practices reinforces their dedication to ensuring the privacy and safety of their guests, and FIVE Tribe members. With their innovative approach and constant vigilance, FIVE continues to set the standard for cybersecurity in the hospitality industry.
