itsme has cracked the code with its open standards for integration, making it possible to create a universal digital identity standard across industries and their applications. It caters to 800 platforms across 20 sectors—including banking, government, and e-health—where users can log in and access any service using simple steps.

itsme wins by finding the balance between usability and security. It leverages high-level security controls like multi-factor authentication, data encryption, and a ‘what you see is what you share’ (WYSIWYG) system while ensuring users have a simple interface. Its user-friendly interface has remained consistent over the years and across screens – mobiles, desktops, and tablets.

itsme is used 20 to 35 million times per month and has an adoption rate in Belgium of 85 percent. The app recently added features to make it accessible to visually impaired people and suitable for 16 and 17-year-olds.

Staying on Top of Compliance Requirements

Being interoperable demands adhering to the regulatory compliance requirements of different industries. itsme efficiently handles this by promptly qualifying for all strict compliance needs at local and European levels.

It offers a digital ID with a level of assurance “high” according to eIDAS (electronic IDentification, Authentication and trust Services in EU) legal framework. It is also ISO 27001-certified, compliant with Network and Information System (NIS), and follows the guidelines of GDPR, Strong Customer Authentication within PSD2, anti-money laundering, and European Banking Authorities (EBA).

Since more advanced eiDAS 2.0 and NIS 2 are underway, Belgian Mobile ID is already focused on learning the differences and adapting its products.

An Onboarding Process That’s a Cakewalk

Users can create an account on itsme in less than five minutes with their passports, eID cards, or bank cards (and PIN).

Once created, they follow a simple process to access the app’s services. On smartphones, users can open the application and authenticate actions for logging in, e-signing documents, or approving transactions. They can see the name of the company or service they are accessing, along with additional details, like the purpose of logging in and the data that they approve to share. It works synonymously on desktops and laptops, but users receive the initial notification on their phones, and give consent through its biometrics or itsme code.

Paving the Path for Advanced Digital Wallets

The Federal Government of Belgium is set to enable citizens to store their official credentials in digital ID wallets, and itsme is focusing on being more inclusive in the world of digital wallets. It is already a part of digital wallets in terms of identifying and authenticating users. It now aims to ensure their consent and ease of use while sharing data from multiple digital wallets. At a time when most people are unaware of digital identity, itsme has created a new product category with its simple and comprehensible solution.
