“To effectively monitor the massive amounts of personal and corporate information available on the deep and dark web requires the help of artificial intelligence technology,” says Sanjay Chopra, CEO of Cognistx, an applied artificial intelligence (AI) company. “AI reduces the need for manual review and helps make sense of this diverse data source; it synthesizes critical information automatically to add business value,” he explains.

Founded in 2015, Pittsburgh-based Cognistx creates adaptive, multi-strategy AI-powered computer systems that extract meaningful insights to produce results for clients. Chopra continues, “Cognistx’s strength lies in applying AI, natural language processing, and deep learning techniques to solve business problems.”

Since Cognistx’s inception, it has formed a strong partnership with Kroll, a world leader in risk management, investigations, and cyber resilience, to identify threats and reduce misuse of sensitive information leaked on the dark web. This partnership has contributed to the development of Kroll’s AI-powered CyberDetectER® suite of solutions, for which it mines about 22 million disparate documents from the dark web on a daily basis.

For example, Kroll’s CyberDetectER BINWatch™ alerts financial institution clients if it detects their associated bank identification numbers (BINs) or credit card information on the dark web. “We are leveraging machine-learning capabilities to analyze files faster, gauge exposure levels, and mitigate risk in real time,” says Brian Lapidus, leader of Koll’s Identity Theft and Breach Notification business.

Cognistx utilizes AI clustering techniques, advanced junk modeling, and deep QA learning techniques on data, developed under the direct supervision of Dr. Eric Nyberg, Chief Data Scientist of Cognistx. Along with cutting-edge technologies, Cognistx boasts a team of leading researchers in the field of cognitive computing and machine intelligence to help achieve clients’ analytical objectives.

Cognistx’s technology and expertise help enable Kroll to identify relevant information quickly and minimize the time required for analysis.

Combined with Kroll’s extensive knowledge base that is continuously monitored by its global team of cyber experts and ability to quickly build a breach response plan, the companies are able to envision and develop sophisticated cyber solutions for ever-evolving data security threats.

“The partnership between Cognistx and Kroll has enabled both companies to enhance their skillsets and has led to successful outcomes, and sometimes eye-opening moments for clients,” states Lapidus. By way of example, Lapidus notes how a team of Cognistx and Kroll experts detected a breach that involved U.S. tax forms. They further discovered that these stolen documents were being traded for cash and other commodities on the dark web.

A common challenge across industries is capturing the required data and normalizing it. For instance, Kroll needs to detect in real-time the data pertaining to client corporations and personnel that have been exposed on the dark web to mitigate fraud and other harmful activities. Cognistx reduces the number of files that need to be analyzed through its junk classification techniques; it also measures the results to determine the business value brought by AI.

Machine learning along with input from analysts is used to better train Cognistx’s detection models. Moving forward, Cognistx and Kroll plan to continue their collaboration as they look to develop unique AI-enabled cybersecurity solutions that will help organizations better prevent, detect, and mitigate the harms caused by data breaches.

SAE International Granted U.S. Patent for Digital Standards Using Machine-Learning Model

SAE International®, a standards development organization dedicated to the advancement of mobility knowledge and solutions for the benefit of humanity, has announced that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has granted SAE a key patent that advances the development of digital standards, revolutionizing the way they’re created, shared and consumed across industries.

Granted to SAE International in partnership with Cognistx, an applied AI company, Generation of Digital Standards Using Machine-Learning Model (Patent No. 11,645,550) is the core technology powering SAE's groundbreaking OnQue Digital Standards Solution, which provides accessible and interoperable digital standards to achieve seamless integration, speed and accuracy throughout the product-development lifecycle.

“SAE is committed to working with industry, other standards development organizations, and product lifecycle and enterprise solutions providers to develop, distribute and deploy digital standards to the right people at the time of need. This patent is a big step in the journey to establish a standard for digital standards,” says David Schutt, CEO of SAE International.

As industries work to transform their operations digitally, industry standards can be a challenge as they are typically only provided via PDF. Digitization of industry standards can be time-consuming and error prone. Existing documents do not always translate into a digital database. Problems can arise with sentence structure, table layouts and variable naming.

The SAE newly patented model allows companies to:

• Convert standards to an interoperable digital form.

• Integrate digital standards into the tools engineers use today through an Application Programming Interface (API).

• More easily search for standards based on the data and content within standards. For example:

“Our AI models enabled SAE to make its library of standards easily searched and used by the organization’s global community of engineers,” said Cognistx Senior Data Scientist, Uxue Zurutuza, one of five co-inventors listed on the patent. “One of the most important advancements to come out of our partnership was the creation of a reliable and proven method for creating digital standards.”

Cognistx Announces East Ohio Regional Hospital's Launch of SQUARY AI Chatbot

"Adding SQUARY to East Ohio Regional Hospital represents a significant step forward in health care communication, allowing it to offer 24/7 support to patients and visitors seeking information online," said Cognistx CEO Sanjay Chopra.

PITTSBURGH - Cognistx, announced the deployment of SQUARY, its AI-powered website assistant, on the East Ohio Regional Hospital (EORH) website.

For EORH, the AI-powered chatbot will streamline communication between the hospital and the community it serves. SQUARY provides the hospital's website visitors with instant responses to a wide range of inquiries, improving access to information and services. The tool pulls information from the website, ensuring all responses are verified and accurate.

One of SQUARY's standout features is its ability to pinpoint answers found within multimedia files. It extracts information from web pages, documents, webinars and podcasts. SQUARY also integrates with providers such as YouTube and Spotify, providing timestamps that save users the hassle of scrolling to find what they need.

"Adding SQUARY to East Ohio Regional Hospital represents a significant step forward in health care communication, allowing it to offer 24/7 support to patients and visitors seeking information online," said Cognistx CEO Sanjay Chopra.

The adoption of SQUARY by EORH will do the following:

• Improve patient engagement and satisfaction

• Reduce wait times for information

• Provide quick access to hospital services, departments and general health information

• Decrease the workload on hospital staff by handling routine inquiries

"Implementing an AI tool on our website aligns with our commitment to leveraging innovative technology to enhance patient care and communication. We're confident SQUARY will significantly improve our ability to serve our community efficiently," said Bernie Albertini, administrator and chief operating officer of EORH. "We're eager for people to use it and tell us about their experience."

User feedback is essential for SQUARY's success. With Cognistx's AI web assistant, each interaction contributes to its enhancement. Website users play a vital role in SQUARY's continuous improvement by simply providing a quick thumbs-up or thumbs-down response.

EORH is among a growing number of businesses that embrace SQUARY. Cybersecurity providers, home remodeling and natural resources management companies are just a few of the many businesses that feature Cognistx's AI chatbot on their websites. You can also see it in action at Cognistx.com.

Adding SQUARY to any website is remarkably simple. Cognistx can seamlessly integrate it onto most company websites within two weeks. That includes adding customizations to incorporate a company's logo, branding and voice and searching multimedia files such as YouTube videos, webinars and podcasts.

SQUARY stands out not only for its innovative features but also for its affordability. While many companies hesitate to embrace AI tools due to budget constraints, SQUARY offers a cost-effective solution. Depending on the website's size and level of customization, the price can start at just a few hundred dollars per month.

An AI website chatbot like SQUARY is an accessible tool that delivers quick results. It understands context, learns from interactions and gives real-time personalized responses. Old-school website chatbots, however, are inflexible and depend on keyword matching with set responses, requiring regular maintenance.

"SQUARY and AI web chatbots serve as knowledgeable assistants that become increasingly intelligent with each interaction. Your customers will appreciate and feel relieved to communicate with a chatbot that truly understands their needs," said Chopra.

SQUARY is the newest AI-driven tool from Cognistx, crafted to enhance workplace and customer experiences. In 2023, the company introduced SQUARE, an AI-powered search engine designed to streamline business operations. This tool enables organizations to search for information within their document ecosystem, providing accurate, verified answers.
