In the risk space, a sudden and dramatic increase in online activity was almost immediately matched by steep rises in cybercrime, fraud and a plethora of other online crimes as financial criminals wasted no time in exploiting new opportunities. Alongside this, global supply chains experienced equally sudden and often severe disruptions, and many firms were left scrambling to onboard new suppliers at short notice and against a backdrop of rising third-party risk.Further, cloud technology has increased in importance in 2021, which presents a challenge for cyber security. For companies that used to have centralised teams working in centralised offices, this new way of working has presented challenges in the way that teams communicate and gain access to the information they need, when they need it. This has caused many corporations to switch to a model of survival-driven management--handle anything that is urgent and put off everything else to another day. Thanks to this mindset, coupled with the shift from employees working in the office to working from home, many organizations either postponed or minimized the number of internal professional training sessions. In many countries, even in the first quarter of 2021, there is no expectation the conditions of social distancing and working from home will change in the near future. Even in "inoculated" Israel, work conditions have not reverted to what they were prior to the pandemic. Thus, we advise risk managers and compliance officers to make sure not to push professional training and instruction into a corner.On another note, it is interesting to see how many popular marketing tactics are also finding their way into the field of professional training. For example, instead of holding group training sessions, important information about the organization's procedures can be displayed on employees' screensavers or in banners in employees' personal zones through the organization's IT systems. The blurring of borders between defined training times and daily routine work creates new challenges for the organization.
