| | DECEMBER - 2020ENTERPRISE SECURITY6Automation in security operations and incident response is nothing new. But the change marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, which pushed organizations to implement mandatory `Work from Home' policies for their employees, has alarmingly increased enterprise security concerns, emphasizing more on automation. With so many organizations forced to adopt remote work practices, it has been advantageous to employ automation to accomplish the most tedious and complicated aspects of security operations workflows. Previous premature "automated" attempts pertaining to antispam and intrusion prevention systems could not reliably identify anomalies and attacks. Detection capabilities have dramatically improved in recent years, especially using behavioral modeling and machine learning-driven approaches. Technology can be trained to act on behavioral indicators across various vectors in the network by using machine learning to understand the origin of an attack and automation to create complex policy actions based on both solution and platform data. This approach has proved to be significantly beneficial in reducing an attack's probability and providing critical details that the IT team needs for successful risk mitigation. While an automated action may be safe in one business sense, it may not be ideal in another. That is why it becomes extremely critical to selectively automate security operations, as not all security approaches can be automated. Ideally, whenever automation technology is used, solution providers must find the correct support level to help organizations find innovative ways to navigate the complex security landscape and enable them to adopt automation to tackle time-consuming security tasks effectively. This edition aims to demystify the complexity of security automation and educate our readers about its ability to transform almost all industries and economies. Through the insights provided by the leading industry leaders in this field, we hope to provide a detailed understanding of the fast-evolving space and its current trends. An Ever-increasing Emphasis on Security AutomationEditorialRussell Thomas Managing Editor russell@enterprisesecuritymag.comDECEMBER - 21 - 2020, Volume 06 - 27 Published by ValleyMedia, Inc.
